Data transfer harness

Every AI system depends on data getting in and results getting out, reliably and under the same controls as the rest of the harness, not through whatever script or shared drive was fastest to set up.

What it controls

The data transfer harness governs how data moves: into training and inference pipelines, between partners and systems, and out again as results. It covers the move itself (encryption, access control, auditability) and the shape of the data (validation, transformation, schema mapping) so what arrives at a model is clean and what leaves it goes somewhere approved.

This is the harness most directly descended from managed file transfer, but it is one control among ten, not the company's identity: the same discipline now applies to moving data for AI pipelines, not just file drops between systems.

Why it matters

Data that moves outside a governed path is data nobody can account for later. A one-off script or a shared drive used to get a dataset to a vendor or a model works, right up until someone needs to know what left, when, and under whose authorization.

Inconsistent, unvalidated data reaching a model also produces unreliable output. That looks like a model problem from the outside, but the cause is almost always upstream: the data pipeline had no governance built in.

What good looks like

  • One governed path for data in and out, not a different ad hoc method per integration
  • Validation and transformation happen at ingest, before bad data reaches a model or pipeline
  • Every transfer is encrypted, access-controlled, and logged
  • Capacity scales without manual intervention — a full disk should never be the reason a transfer fails
  • Retention, versioning and deletion are policy-driven, not manual cleanup after the fact

How it works with the other harnesses

Policy decides which data may go where; data transfer carries it there under that rule. Audit records every transfer. Guardrails and security apply once the data is in motion or in a model's reach. None of those controls matter if the transfer itself happens outside the governed path.

Frequently asked questions

Is this just a rebranded file transfer product?

Data transfer is one of ten harnesses, not the company's identity. The underlying discipline (secure, governed movement of data) now applies to AI pipelines and partner collaboration, not only file drops.

What counts as a transfer?

Any movement of data into a model, pipeline or partner system, and any result leaving one — not just scheduled file jobs.

How does this relate to data residency and sovereignty?

Data transfer is the mechanism; residency and sovereignty are among the policy rules it enforces, for example keeping data in an approved region as it moves.

What happens to data that doesn't pass validation?

It should be rejected or flagged before it reaches a model or downstream system, not discovered as a problem after the fact.
