Data residency and sovereignty

Treat where data lives, and which law governs it, as a design requirement. That keeps sensitive data in approved jurisdictions under auditable oversight.

Residency and sovereignty, defined

Data residency is the physical location where data is stored and processed. Data sovereignty is the legal framework that governs the data, wherever it is accessed.

In practice that means placing data by region, aligning access controls with jurisdiction, enforcing policy on cross-border transfers, and auditing that localization rules are followed.

Why sovereignty matters for AI and analytics

AI and analytics pipelines handle personal, financial, healthcare, proprietary and government-regulated data. Without sovereign controls, organizations risk regulatory violations, cross-border breaches, loss of legal authority over their data and exposure of models to restricted datasets.

Regulatory drivers

GDPR, financial and healthcare rules, government mandates, India's DPDP Act and emerging AI governance rules increasingly require explicit control over data transfers. Platforms need region-specific handling, policy-based approval of cross-border transfers, audit-ready evidence and alignment with Zero Trust.

Six principles

  • Region-aware control planes
  • Policy-driven data movement
  • Identity-bound access governance
  • Cryptographic separation of data and control
  • Continuous audit and compliance validation
  • Isolation of regulated workloads by jurisdiction

Hybrid, multi-cloud and partners

Enterprises work across cloud regions, providers, global partners and distributed AI platforms. Jurisdiction-specific routing and storage policy, sovereign access enforcement, audit of cross-organization transfers and traceable data paths let organizations collaborate globally and stay locally compliant.

In the harness

Data sovereignty is handled by the Data transfer harness, with Policy deciding where data may go and Audit proving it.

Frequently asked questions

What is data residency?

Enforcing where data is physically stored and processed to meet regional regulatory requirements.

What is data sovereignty?

Data stays under the legal authority of its governing jurisdiction, even when accessed globally or by AI systems.

Why does it matter for AI training data?

Training datasets often contain regulated information. Sovereign control supports lawful use and prevents cross-border violations.

How does it relate to Zero Trust?

Zero Trust verifies every access request. Sovereignty ensures access and movement are legally permitted within defined jurisdictions.
