What breaks when AI data moves without a harness

Most AI data does not leak because a model misbehaves. It leaks because nobody controlled how it got to the model in the first place.

The default path is informal

A data scientist needs a sample for a vendor, a team needs to share training data with a partner, a model needs a document to answer a question. Without a governed path, the fallback is email, a shared drive, or a script someone wrote for one job and never retired.

What that costs later

  • Copies spread across inboxes, caches and backups that nobody tracks
  • No record of which model or vendor saw which file, or when
  • No one can say whether a deletion request was actually honored
  • Every new data source or model means another one-off script to maintain

The model is not the problem

A model only ever sees what it is handed. If that handoff has no policy behind it, no amount of care at the model layer fixes it afterward. The fix is upstream, in how data reaches the model at all.

What a harness changes

Data moves through one governed path instead of scattered one-off channels. Retention, encryption and access rules travel with the data, so compliance is part of the path, not a cleanup project discovered during an audit.

In the harness

Data transfer carries the path, Guardrails sets what a model or vendor may touch, and Audit proves what happened.
